DIY: Tissue Paper Flowers

1/9/2014

Looking through all the gorgeous pictures of the flower displays that we previously posted, in our colour inspiration post, we realised we don't always have the time to keep our house full of fresh flowers.

This post is a great idea for those of you who have allergies to certain flowers, yet love the way they look or if you don't have the time or money to keep them lasting in your home. This is also a fun idea for the crafty readers and to bring a little creativity into your household.

This tutorial expresses your creative side and helps to show your personality through the creations you make!

Supplies

The supplies you need for this project are
  • Tissue Paper - you can find thin tissue paper at any craft store near you, let your personality show through with your choice of colours, there are lots of different types to choose, from patterned to plain and even shiny paper. I just used pain coloured tissue paper in this tutorial.
  • Florist Tape - Florist tape is green tape that is very stretchy. It is usually used for stem wrapping for buttonhole flowers.
  • Wire - You can find wire at any craft store, I used green wire to blend in with the stems.
  • Scissors - Last but not least scissors sharp enough to cut through the wire.

Instructions

Step 1. Firstly choose the tissue paper you are going to use, I went with this pastel orange colour. You will need 6 layers of tissue paper. As my sheets were large I cut them into quarters to achieve the size I wanted which is slightly larger than a piece of A4 sized paper.

The size you choose is completely up to you, you can have large or small flowers, but the larger you make them the more layers of tissue paper you will need.

Step 2. Place the layers of tissue paper to one side. We will now create the stem for the flower.
Once again the sizing is up to you, my stems were about 30 cm long which included the allowance to hold the flower. Once you have chosen you size make 6 lengths of the wire. There is no need to cut it, just keep going back on yourself as seen in the picture above. Twist the wires together to keep them in place.

Step 3. Take the florist tape and wrap around the 'stem' leaving no exposed wire. This helps to keep the wire together and covers up any sharp ends. If you opted to use ribbon then take the same approach but ensuring to glue the ends using either a glue gun or PVA Glue.

Step 4. Back to the tissue paper. Start with the tissue paper facing in a portrait fashion. To create the flower head we start fold the paper so it ends up in a concertina as shown above. To do this you fold the end over, flip the paper, then fold it back on itself until you have a result similar to the picture above.

Step 5. Take the wire stem and wrap it around the center of the folded issue paper. Make sure this is secure as it will be holding the flower head.

Step 6. Take the scissors and cut a semi-circle at each end to round off the edges.

Step 7. Here you can see the petal effect that cutting the ends made. We now want to spread out the concertina like in the picture above. This will help with our next step.

Step 8. Take time with this, start to slowly and gently separate the layers of tissue paper by lifting them up into the centre. Just as shown in the photograph above.

Step 9. Separate the layers of tissue paper on both sides of the flower, be careful not to tear the paper.

Step 10/11. And that's it! It is such an easy and fun project to complete.
These flowers make a beautiful addition to any home and can even be used to decorate for parties or weddings. This a quick craft to do with your children to display in their room. The wide range of colours of tissue paper allows you to brighten any room whether it be an office or bedroom.

At Emiline House we placed our flowers in a simple white jug placed on a nightstand.
